Wing Chun General Class
These classes are an all-rounder! They cover all aspects of Wing Chun training, including the Forms, Chi Sau and self-defence techniques. We recommend that you participate in at least one of these classes per week so you can practise the techniques required for moving up within our curriculum and grading system.
Chi Sau Class
These classes are exclusively for you to practise the Chi Sau (Sticking Hands) exercise. Chi Sau is the main exercise for practising the fighting techniques of Wing Chun. It is the application of the movements and principles from the Forms, so once you have learned how to mindfully relax your body during the movements of each Form, it is then necessary to learn how to apply and maintain such relaxation under the pressure of incoming force.
Ultimately Wing Chun tries to apply its strongest structure on the opponent’s weakest point, i.e., to take advantage of leverage, misdirected force, poor structure and technique. So Chi Sau is the playing field in which to explore these strong and weak elements.
When at close range, reflex time is greatly reduced and it is therefore essential that the arms can spontaneously “think” and automatically react for themselves. Chi Sau training develops remarkable sensitivity in the arms, which allows them to achieve this ability. This is achieved by learning how to “stick” to the opponent’s arms once contact is made through sensitivity and adaptability. Once you are able to feel and neutralise your opponent’s force it becomes possible to control their arms and effectively their balance. The ability to control a person’s balance means that you can control their movements and subdue them or strike at will, while not allowing them to control or strike you.
Wing Chun Dynamics Class
The focus of these classes is the application of the self-defence side of Wing Chun. They consist of drills, Chi Sau sparring, free sparring (Wing Chun vs. kickboxing) and pad work. Some other Wing Chun schools choose not to practise free sparring, which could mean that if you find yourself in a real combat situation, you might freeze up in the moment a strike is coming your way; that’s why we believe that controlled sparring is a necessary aspect of Wing Chun training so that you attain sufficient self-defence skills. Furthermore, you’ll get more of a cardio workout and a sweat going in these classes compared to our other classes!
These classes are solely dedicated to learning and practising the 6 Form-sets of Wing Chun. Forms are a fundamental part of any type of martial art. However, many students don’t know why the forms are important or what is to be achieved by practising them, so these classes are designed to provide deeper understanding of each of the Forms.
All forms of martial arts are concerned with seeking “strong power”. As Wing Chun Kung Fu emphasises relaxation, many people will ask whether relaxation can help develop a strong force. Actually, the main purpose of relaxation is to make sure that all of your joints and muscles can be used freely during movements and your ability to receive force is actually much greater when your body is relaxed; this is because a relaxed body can take an incoming force like a spring. Have you noticed the way a cat lands after a jump?
Power development is based on the theory of force. Most people know that force is formed from the combination of mass and speed together. How then can Wing Chun Kung Fu apply this theory in the development of its power?
Wing Chun has three empty hand Forms (meaning no weapons), which together formulate the foundation of the art; Siu Nim Tau (“Tiny Idea” ), Chum Kiu (“Detecting Hand-Bridge”) and Biu Jee (“Darting Fingers”). Each one of these Forms creates part of the elements of the theory of force. Together they comprise the essence of the Wing Chun system and are exercises and movements that train you to apply the principles and react spontaneously and effectively.
In addition to the three empty hand forms, Wing Chun has two Weapons Forms (Butterfly Knives and Long Pole) and of course the famous Wooden Dummy Form.
MWC Senior Class (Monday, 4pm)
This senior only class will be centred around Chum Kiu and equip you with a broader insight into our method of Wing Chun.
Chum Kiu can be translated to "Seeking the bridge".
This, Wing Chun's 2nd form, builds upon the foundations cultivated from the 1st form, Siu Nim Tao.
The skills gained here will further develop the ability to generate greater force by tapping into the bodies mass through pivoting and stepping.
A thorough understanding of the body mechanics involved through coordination of joints, developing the mind set which stems from Siu Nim Tao, force application of each movement and the understanding of different types of forces and the potential applications of each movement and how they translate into Chi Sau practice.
This is a great opportunity for senior practitioner's to deepen their overall understanding of the Mindful Wing Chun method and take your knowledge to the next level!
Curriculum and Grading System
The traditional way of teaching Kung Fu is without gradings and curriculum. You would be asked to stand for hours and practise a particular stance, posture or movement, and it would sometimes take years before the Master would teach the next step. Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin also followed this method when teaching the Head Teachers of Mindful Wing Chun. This method of teaching can be very effective if the student has the patience, dedication and time to practise the same thing diligently for hours every day.
We believe that in the busy lifestyle of Hong Kong, very few people have the time for this way of teaching, which is why we have come up with a refined curriculum and grading system. The curriculum has been designed to systematically teach the philosophy, self-defence and internal aspects of Master Chu’s Wing Chun System. Having a grading system also means that you must attain a certain level of understanding and ability in a given level before moving onto the next. It also provides guidelines about what will be taught later and the timeline in which you can advance within the Wing Chun System.
